| Reeds | Vandoren V12
Rico Reserve Classic(make sure it's not regular Rico) Vandoren Rue L'Epic 56 Each student should know which reed I have recommended for them to play. This is determined by their mouthpiece and embouchure, not by how long they have been playing! Don't let the music store clerk talk you into substitutes! All reeds are NOT equal! |
Reeds purchased at the music stores are getting REALLY expensive. I always order mine online. The most reliable and cheapest cost web site I have found is www.1stopclarinet.com It usually takes about 1 week to get reeds, but sometimes it's a little longer. They have frequent sales and sometimes free shipping. But even with shipping, they are usually cheaper than the music stores. |
| Neck Strap | Neo-tech - Good - about $17 BG - C20E - Good - about $17 Clarichord - Ineffective. I don't recommend it. |
I require a neck strap for ALL beginners. It helps with stability and allows development of good hand position which is essential to good clarinet playing. Many of my advanced students still use one, and I always play with my neck strap! |
| Reed Guard | Get one with room for at least 4 reeds | A reed guard helps reeds last longer by flattening the tip when the reed is damp to prevent warping. |
| Cork Grease | One tube is a lifetime supply. | Only needed on a new cork. |
| Music Stand | Any folding stand will work. | A real plus for at home practice. |
| Swab | The thin, silky ones are the best. | Regular swabbing keeps the pads from deteriorating prematurely. |
| Metronome/Tuner | Probably came with the clarinet | If not, I would get one that is both and tuner and metronome. |
