American Legacy Concert March was written in memory of the composer’s grandfather Otto A. Mattei, Sr. and dedicated to the Mattei Middle School Honor Band of Princeton, Texas. Directed by Samantha Humphreys, Jason Tucker, and Ben Cordell, the ensemble gave the work its premiere in March 2026. Following a boldly stated introduction, the first strain presents its melody in the trumpets, flutes, and oboes. On its repeat, a tenor-range countermelody adds interest while the clarinets and trombones provide a steady rhythmic accompaniment throughout. In the second strain, the horns and low brass take the melodic spotlight before the return of the first strain, where the flutes add an extra touch of brilliance to the counterline. The trio features expressive contrasts through rapidly changing dynamics, a brief break strain, and a majestic return of the trio theme in a new key. With modest technical and range demands, memorable melodies, and well-balanced accompaniment and countermelodies, every section has a meaningful and achievable role to play.
