Evensong takes its title from the peaceful evening church service of the same name. Like evening prayer services found in many faith traditions, an evensong service is a time of quiet reflection and contemplation. Although the Evensong melodies are often set against contemporary harmonies, many of the themes evoke the timeless character of ancient chant.

While the technical demands and instrumental ranges are modest, Evensong calls for musical maturity, sensitivity, and expressive playing from the conductor, featured soloists, and the entire ensemble.

Rather than serving as a concert opener or finale, Evensong is intended to provide a moment of quiet beauty and reflection, offering a meaningful contrast within the larger program.

Evensong is lovingly dedicated, in memoriam, to Rev. H. Howard Surface (1927–2011), the longtime rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and the composer's pastor during his youth.
